A letter to our tea vendor Prime Minister!
A letter to our tea vendor Prime Minister!
Dear Narendra bhai,
I am half your age. But, let me call you bhai. Having lived and studied in Gujarat for two years, I liked the concept of “Bhai” and “Ben” the most. It brings me closer to people who I don’t even know personally. I need to feel that I am writing to an elder brother so that I can be straightforward in this letter. I am writing to tell you a few things about Bharat, Narendra Bhai. Don’t be astonished I know you know much more than me about our country. But, let me vent out all my emotions. The emotions suppressed for last many years, as there was nobody to share with.
Narendra bhai, I have not voted for you. I have voted to somebody I know personally, so that one of my closest can be benefitted in her transfer in govt job. But, your win, you visiting your mother and your victory speech have arose so much of hope in me. I have started seeing my ‘Self’ in you. I don’t know what made me so confident that this letter will reach you, you will read and I will get a response as well! I hope you will read with patience.
I was born in a village in Haryana. I used to love to go to the fields and take my buffalo to the pond. She used to recognize me I was just 5/6 when we shifted to a nearby town. But that feeling is still unforgettable. I don’t see that now a days Narendra bhai. Nobody wants to do agriculture. I can understand if people have some better option. But, No. There are so many youngsters who are not doing agriculture because it is not in-fashion. It is perceived to be a low job now. And less paying as well. Narendra bhai ,can we go back to our fields again? With pride?
Narendra bhai you had been a tea vendor yourself. But, let me still remind you. Nearly all tea vendors in Gurgaon, where I live, are those who have migrated from UP, Bihar and Bengal. Why do they have to come so far to earn 5/6000 rupees. They miss their children. Can’t they go back? No, don’t take me wrong. Gurgaon is as much their city as mine. I too am a migrant. But, can’t we at least give them a choice. Narendra bhai you should be able to do justice to the concept of village-level enterprises, so much practiced by Gandhi. There are a few examples as well. I am sure you know SEWA and Amul. Can’t we create a national level revolution, now?
You said – “bharat ko 60 mahine mei mere jaisa mazdoor nahi milega”. I am sure, nahi milega. I have come to know through my friends in Gujarat that you are a workaholic. This statement actually gives me a lot of relief. Because, I am confident that you will take care of your fellow mazdoors. I don’t need to elaborate on this. They will share with you a lot of stories. Now, you have no choice but to listen to them!
Narendra bhai, I have stayed in Kerala with fishermen community. I was forced to do that as part of my post graduation studies. Amazingly hard working women. They wake up at 3 in the morning to collect fish from the shore and sell them. No, they can’t afford to sleep early as their men come late in night after fishing. Some, even come late because they have to drink. The local buses don’t allow them to aboard the buses, because they “stink” of fish. They are abused. I see that in Delhi as well. No, not the fisherwomen. But, I see that the girls are being abused. No, may not be literally. But, they are still not allowed to work. Parents are concerned more about their safety than their career. Narendra bhai, one day I was coming back to my campus at 2 am in the night. I saw two girls walking at Ganesh Chowkdi in Anand. like free birds. Can’t that happen in Delhi? I am sure, a common gujarati is as human as a common delhite. But, why so much of difference?
At some point of my career, I was visiting schools in remotest regions of the country. There are buildings. There is a computer in every school, bhai. But, the teachers lack in motivation. No, they don’t shirk their responsibilities. My wife is a teacher. I am amazed to see how much she feels for students. There is some deeper issue, which I am sure you will decipher. I can tell you that the guru is demotivated.
I have worked with a very hard-working IAS officer. Even if you claim to be the top mazdoor, I will always rate you as second best because of him. See, I told you I will be straightforward with you! Give him, and others like him, a chance to have more freedom, Narendra bhai. Why does he have to bog down under political pressure?
I remember, those were the election days in Gujarat and I asked Salim, the auto driver, “Who will you vote for? He said – “Narendra bhai, aur kaun??”. I know, muslims love you as much as hindus do. I also know that you don’t even look at us as hindus and muslims. Narendra bhai, one of my best friends is somebody called Sajid. Any day, if I have to choose between you and him, I will choose Sajid. Yes, even if you score 100/100 in all my previous concerns. I have a friend in Pakistan as well. I have never met her, but, want to feel proud of you whenever I face her. Narendra bhai you will be represented by around 330 MPs now. Make sure, Sajid and I accept all of them.
I have asked so much from you. But, I believe in equal partnership. So, here is the proposition. I won’t assess you in next five years. Not at all. I know you will need time to experiment and learn and then try again. As the challenge is many-folds difficult than Gujarat.
So, I make a promise. I will vote for you in 2019, irrespective of your performance. You give your best shot; I am with you. “mei wrong side vehicle nahi chalaoonga!”
Sincerely,
Prerit (eprerit@gmail.com)
